#CJP Insights : Going offline for my Mrs’s Job

Beneath the veneer of the happy housewife — that quintessential image of the “feminine mystique” — is a self-effacing woman who begrudgingly buried her career dreams to facilitate her husband’s success and eventual fame.

The reverse is not very uncommon.

In India, the concept of a husband taking the back seat in his career, so that the wife can advance in hers, is very rare and unheard of.  So to say, can a husband, like Emperor Ashoka after the battle of Kalinga, turn his back on war (career), that for a spouse.

We had a Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor starrer Ki &Kawhere, unlike the stereotypical hero, the man here is a progressive house husband, an IIM Bangalore graduate, who lovingly supports his wife’s ambitions as a go-getting career woman in her marketing career.

Rubin Ritter, the 38 year old co-CEO of online fashion retailer Zalando is stepping down to focus on his family, saying his wife\’s career should “take priority\” in the coming years.

Overseeing strategy and communications, he helped turn the Berlin-based start-up from into one of the world\’s top online fashion retailers, that sells clothes and shoes from high street brands such as Adidas (ADDDF) and Ralph Lauren (RL) online to 36 million customers and revenue of €6.5bn (£5.8bn) last year.Mr Ritter, 38, earned €6.8m in 2019 and €20.2m in 2018, making him one of Germany\’s highest paid executives. And now he states, \”My wife and I have agreed that for the coming years, her professional ambitions should take priority.”

BCCI granted a paternity leave to India skipper ViratKohli.  He said \”It\’s a decision that was absolutely clear in my mind. As committed as you are to play for your country this is a very, very special moment in life that you want to be there for at any cost. It\’s a blessed time and we\’re very excited\”.

So, are we really looking at a tectonic shift in attitudes? J
