Everyone loves dual sources of income – isn’t it
The phrase ‘moonlighting’ refers to employees working for others in their free time and has become a contentious topic of discussion in social media.
There is a lot of chatter about people moonlighting in the tech industry. This is cheating – plain and simple,” Rishad Premji, chairman of Wipro, recently tweeted.
if we take the companies in the IT space – TCS, HCL, Infosys etc, even though the companies don’t use the word ‘moonlighting’; the contracts, in essence, are laden with warnings of strict action against employees who wish to venture out for freelance gigs while being employed with the company
In contrast , in August, for its full-time employees, Swiggy unveiled India’s first policy employees that allows moonlighting, subject to internal approvals. The company said “Moonlighting is the future of work; why not normalise it”. Mr. Girish, the HR head , said – “We think that just because someone is employed with us for nine hours, they’re productive. That’s not true.… you can’t wake up one day and say I’m going to make everyone productive. It doesn’t happen that way,”
The question also emerges as to how , in a WFH environment , how would one monitor conflict of interest under the moonlight framework ; how would one ensure that sense of ethics being followed by employees fully – will this action compromise the company’s competitive advantages or IPRs to competition
What do you think?
Would love to hear from you
